The Statistics Study Program is one of the three study programs managed by the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS). The Department of Mathematics at FMIPA UNHAS was established in 1963, together with the establishment of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences at Universitas Hasanuddin. At the time, the Department of Mathematics, which initially was a Mathematics Study Program, has only three teaching staffs (Dra. Nurul Muchlisa, Drs. Sukirman, and Drs. A Suhardjono) who served mathematics and statistics teaching in all departments/study programs at Universitas Hasanuddin. During the first couple of years, there were no students enrolled in this Study Program (SP) until 1973, where some students were accepted in diploma levels. After graduating the students had to continue their study at Bandung Institute Technology to finish their bachelor degree (B.Sc.). Started from 1981, the SP conducted a bachelor degree program in Mathematics. Since 1998, the Bachelor Program in Mathematics is accredited by the National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education in Indonesia (BAN-PT) with a grade of B. Responding to market demands and societal needs, the Statistics Study Program was opened in 1996 as one of the outcomes of a curriculum development workshop in the Department of Mathematics in 1994 in Tana Toraja. The initiator of the Statistics study program was Drs. Muh. Yusuf Wahab, MS, considering the desires of the community, especially the needs of the workforce. The establishment and operational permit for the Statistics Study Program in 1996 were based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 234/DIKTI/Kep/1996, and it was accredited in 2006 with a grade of B according to BAN-PT Decree No. 012/BAN-PT/Ak-X/S1/VIII/2006. Subsequent accreditation in 2013 also received a grade of B based on BAN-PT Decree Number 217/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-XVI/S/X/2013, dated October 26, 2013. In 2019, the Statistics Study Program evolved into the Department of Statistics, which was formerly under the Department of Mathematics. The Department of Statistics currently oversees two study programs: the Bachelor's Program in Statistics and the Master's Program in Statistics. The last accreditation of the Bachelor's Program in Statistics is awarded grade “A” BAN-PT with accreditation number 3320/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/XII/2018. The accreditation is valid from 19-12-2018 until 19-12-2023. Besides that, the Bachelor Program in Statistics is certified by AUN-QA for 2021 with number AP754UNHASNOV21.
